FAQ

What is biblical counseling?

Biblical counseling is intensive Christian discipleship. It’s a counseling approach that uses the Bible to address multifaceted issues in the lives of individuals, couples, and families. It focuses on human sin and suffering, with an eye towards equipping people to trust and obey God regardless of what they’re facing, because He alone is their eternal peace and joy, and He alone can bring about lasting transformation.

What is your counseling approach?

No lame platitudes, but biblical truth spoken in love. No coddling, but gospel comfort and encouragement. No self-help advice, but concrete instructions on how to trust Christ and walk in love. In other words, you get effective counseling based on a biblical model for change:1. Consideration: A close look at your circumstances.2. Confession: A deep acknowledgment of how and why you're responding the way you are.3. Commitment: A heart-level application of the Bible and a sincere commitment to trust and obey God.4. Change: Living out what you're learning with practical guidance.Life is not easy or formulaic. And this model is not intended to communicate that it is. This is hard work. But, it's glorious. And it works.

What should I expect from counseling?

Once you have decided to seek counseling, the next question you need to wrestle with, both privately and with your counselor, is what to expect. People bring expectations to nearly every situation and counseling is no exception. While there are some aspects of counseling that can be clearly defined; cost, length of session, appointment regularity, etc., there are others that need clarification. If you are seeking formal counseling, you should have at least a general idea of the areas you want to focus on. When you seek counsel, be ready to discuss these issues. With that said, don’t be surprised if there are changes. Often what seems to be the “big issue” is only masking other things that are left untouched or tucked away. Often, we need the insight of others to carefully take us to things we may otherwise avoid. It's also important to remember that counselors deal with people, and we are not called to fix people; we are called to love them. Therefore, a good counselor will help you see that people are not problems to be solved. Rather, they are individuals made in the image of God, who must relate to Him and others rightly. Therefore, you can expect your counselor to focus on what you think, what you value, how you live, and the consequences you are experiencing as a result.

What makes biblical counseling different from secular therapy and counseling?

While there are a litany of different counseling approaches and therapies, biblical counseling develops its model from the Scriptures. It takes the biblical principles of how we are to relate to God and others and puts them into practice.Biblical counseling is distinct from secular counseling in many ways. And it’s distinctives flow from a sincere believe in the God of the Bible and the sufficiency of His Word. Secular therapy and counseling are rooted in evolutionary theory and humanism, so it’s source of authority, understanding of the problem, and attempted solutions reflect these core assumptions. In view of this, biblical counseling is best described as “an intensive form of discipleship,” because we strive to speak into peoples’ live using God’s wisdom rather than worldly wisdom.

What counseling issues do you address?

People come to us with many different struggles. We believe that the Bible addresses all of them. So, we apply a Christ-centered, biblical worldview to all of life’s problems.Examples of common struggles include anxiety, anger, betrayal, childhood trauma, codependency, depression, fear of man, grief, identity and purpose, marriage and family issues, pornography, work-related problems, and sexual sin.

Do you accept insurance?

We do not, but it’s for your benefit. We do not accept insurance because to do so requires that I be licensed by the state. While Nick holds a degree and several reputable certifications, a state license would require him to receive a degree that focuses on secular therapeutic content and methodology—most often from a secular graduate institution. He would also have to pass a state-sanctioned licensure exam that is committed to an atheistic and humanistic worldview. Depending on the state, he must also perform a certain number of counseling hours under the supervision of a state-licensed therapist. The entire process is void of Scripture and usually takes between four and six years. In contrast, he received an undergrad in biblical and theological studies and 4 years of counseling training from a reputable institution. He's also completing a Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling, and he's certified by the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC) and the International Associate of Biblical Counselors (IABC). He also completed nearly 200 hours of supervised counseling. From start to finish, this process has taken 9 years. What does all this mean for you? It means you get a highly trained and experienced counselor who isn’t controlled by a state government that opposes God and your ultimate good. It means biblical counseling may appear more expensive, but it’s not, because you’ll experience lasting change, and you won’t be subjected to endless counseling that costs you more in the long run.In short, insurance does not cover biblical counseling. But this is a good thing, because it gives us more freedom, and it’s cheaper in the long run.
